Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) is a list of specific questions that are commonly asked by our customers. If you are thinking about buying a locking mailbox, or have a few unanswered questions, please continue reading to see if the answer to your lockable mailbox questions is answered below.  

1. Question: What materials are your mailboxes made of? Answer: All our mailboxes are made of high-quality stainless steel or durable galvanized steel, and built for a lifetime of use. We are now carrying a select few aluminum mailboxes that meet our high standard of quality. Thick gauge aluminum works well in areas where you might see corrosion, like near the ocean. All of our coated mailboxes or drop boxes have a durable powder coated finish. 

2. Question: How safe is it to order online with my credit card? Answer: We guarantee that every transaction you make at the Locking Security Mailbox Store will be safe. This means you pay nothing if unauthorized charges are made to your card as a result of shopping at the Locking Security Mailbox Store. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, your bank cannot hold you liable for more than $50 of fraudulent charges. If your bank does hold you liable, the Locking Security Mailbox Store will pay the entire liability for you, up to the full $50. The Locking Security Mailbox Store will pay this liability only if the unauthorized use of your credit card resulted through no fault of your own from purchases made at the Locking Security Mailbox Store while using our secure server. In the event of unauthorized use of your credit card, you must notify your credit card provider in accordance with its reporting rules and procedures. When you make a purchase online with the Locking Security Mailbox Store, the transaction is encrypted and secure. When you enter payment information, you will see an icon at the bottom of your browser that shows this. You will also see that the address begins with "https:" which means that it is a secure connection.

3. Question: If my mailbox is locked, how does the mail get into the mailbox? Answer: There is a slot on each mailbox, that allows the mail to be dropped into the mailbox. The slot varies in size depending on the box. Either the mail slot is not large enough for someone to pull mail out or larger openings are designed so that when the door is opened to put mail in, the hopper closes off the drop area.

4. Question: Does the postal carrier have a key? Answer: No. The postal carrier drops the mail through the mail slot, which drops into the locked body of the mailbox.

5. Question: Should I use my existing post or buy one? Answer: You can use your existing post; however, we recommend buying the post sold with the mailbox. If you do not have an existing post, we highly recommend buying the post that goes with the mailbox.

6. Question: How do I mount my locking mailbox? Answer: There are two mounting options: a wall mount or a post mount. Each mailbox comes with instructions for both options.

7. Question: What is the size of the mail inlet slot? Answer: Depending on the mailbox you choose, the slot the postal carrier puts the mail into ranges from 1 ¾” X 13” to 1 5/8" x 10" x 14” which is large enough to hold two 1 quart paint cans laying on their side.

8. Question: Which is the best mailbox for me? Answer: If you’re buying a wall-mounted mailbox, they are all very similar in function. We recommend choosing the one that best meets the style of your home. For curbside mailboxes we recommend that you first consider the size you need. If you have mainly envelopes and magazines the locking steel curbside mailbox model SM7or black locking curbside mailbox model A5100B will meet your needs. *For high-security needs model AB20B is our best and most secure locking mailbox. If you receive larger parcels, a large number of envelopes or are away for extended periods of time, we recommend the Large locking mailbox model AS16HB or Extra Large locking mailbox model ASXLHB.

9. Question: Is there a place for outgoing mail? Answer: Most of our mailboxes have an area that allows you to place your outgoing mail. However, because of the increasing number of mail thefts, we encourage you to drop your outgoing mail at an authorized U.S. Mail drop.

10. Question: What is the difference in the different gauges of steel? For example, some mailboxes are 16 or 20 gauge steel and some are made of aluminum. Answer: Locking Security Mailbox carries mailboxes made from steel. 16 gauge stainless steel is a higher quality grade than 20 gauge. This is because 16 gauge is thicker and heavier, making it stronger and more durable. 16 gauge steel is ideal when extra strength and durability are needed. The lower the number of gauge, the stronger it is. Some of our mailboxes are made of multiple gauges of steel. Where extra strength is needed on areas where thieves may pry to open the box, heavier gauge steel is used. *Typically 18 or 20 gauge steel is strong for a locking mailbox. We do have mailboxes made from 14-gauge steel for those who need a high security mailbox. We are now carrying a select few aluminum mailboxes that meet our high standard of quality.
